Choosing the location of your first Athens apartment is very important! Athens is not a large city, yet each Athens neighborhood has a completely different vibe. The prices of rent can also be dependent on what neighborhood the apartment is in. There can be a few different opinions on what the neighborhoods of Athens are, but the best apartments are usually found in these: Normaltown, Five Points, Downtown, and Chicopee-Dudley.

Normaltown

Downtown Athens is a great place to live.
Most people in Athens associate Normaltown with Prince Avenue. Normaltown is a great place to live if you want the feel of Athens, but not necessarily the college town part. Graduate Students prefer this area. This neighborhood is about a ten-minute drive to UGA's main campus, depending on how far into the neighborhood you are looking at. However, UGA's Health Sciences campus is in Normaltown, so if you are interested in that field, you should consider this area. This area has a lot of great restaurants, bars, coffee shops, and boutiques.

Five Points

Five Points is another great location for your first Athens apartment. Located at the intersection of Milledge Avenue and Lumpkin Street, this location is super close to UGA's campus and sorority row! Five Points has a variety of restaurants, including the Athens favorite, Cali N Tito's, which serves unique Latin American cuisine. If you feel like shopping, this area also has plenty of adorable boutiques and shops to browse in, as well as the popular bakery, Independent Baking Co.

Downtown Athens

If you want the UGA Athens experience, living in an off campus apartment in downtown Athens will be the best place for you. Downtown Athens is incredibly close to UGA's North Campus and the Arch, therefore there are a plethora of luxury apartment buildings to choose from. Most of these communities will be close enough to campus to consider themselves a walkable distance. However, you might want to consider the Athens heat in the summer, which can make a fifteen-minute walk feel like an hour. During football season, weekends will be more crowded downtown because of all the great restaurants and bars being within walking distance of Sanford Stadium. Downtown is a great location but be prepared to pay the prices. If you are into working out downtown might be the place for you. Apartments with fitness centers are more common in luxury apartments which are prevalent downtown.

Chicopee-Dudley

Chicopee-Dudley is more for nature lovers but is close to downtown as well. This neighborhood runs along the Oconee River and is therefore close to the North Oconee River Greenway. If you enjoy running or biking, this is a great location for you. This area is mostly residential, so there are not as many shops as in the other neighborhoods, however, it does have the famous Athens brunch spot, Mama's Boy.
