History of Grady College

Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication was started in 1915. It was started by Steadman V. Sanford, an English professor, who felt that journalism should be included in the University of Georgia's curriculum. The Board agreed and the School of Journalism was approved on June 12th, 1915. The name the facility currently has was given to it in June 1921, by the Board of Regents. It was unnamed after legendary Atlanta journalist and UGA alumni Henry Woodfin Grady. Grady was an editor for the Atlanta Constitution, and built it up to become one of the most impactful publicists in the US. The school changed the name in 1988 to incorporate Mass Communications. Now Grady College offers several graduate degrees and four undergraduate majors. They include advertising, entertainment and media studies, journalism and public relations.
