How can I prepare for the weather in Athens before I come to UGA?

If you are coming to UGA as an out-of-state or international student, you may be wondering how to prepare for the weather in Athens. As someone who has been a resident of Georgia for over a decade, I am all too familiar with the weather here–including its sometimes-unpredictable nature. Although Georgia is a southern state that has a reputation for being hot, we still experience the full range of seasons here. With that being said, I'll be sharing some key tips to keep in mind when packing for your move to your new Athens apartment!

What You'll Need in Your Athens Wardrobe

At the University of Georgia, the fall semester typically begins in early-to-mid August. As one of the hottest months in the year, you'll want to prepare for this. You may want to consider packing shorts, tank tops, and cotton t-shirts. A good tip is to pack basic items of clothing that you can make several different outfits out of by mixing and matching. If you are planning to attend any football games in the fall semester, it's tradition at UGA to wear red and black, so I'd consider packing those colors as well. Also, UGA is a large campus, and you may find yourself walking a lot, you should make sure you pack some comfortable sneakers that are easy to walk in.

I like to refer to the early fall season in Georgia as "Summer 2.0." Although fall technically starts in September, the weather in Athens doesn't tend to noticeably cool down until around mid-to-late October or November. Even then, a typical Athens day could start at forty degrees, jump to eighty by the afternoon, and go back down by nightfall. To prepare for this whiplash-like weather, it's a good idea to pack some lightweight jackets, hoodies, and/or cardigans that you can easily take off for when the day gets hotter. Sweatshirts and hoodies will also be your best friend when it comes to this weather. Winter in Athens can be quite cold, so you'll want to bring at least one good winter coat, as well as a good selection of long sleeves. While snow isn't very common in Georgia, it can happen–especially in the more northern parts–so I'd keep that in mind too; consider packing a scarf, gloves, and a couple beanies or winter hats. In addition, Athens does receive rain somewhat often, and it can be very unpredictable when it occurs. Many UGA students have raincoats—it's a good idea to keep one in your bag in case you unexpectedly need it.

Additional Tips to Prepare for Athens Weather

Before getting dressed every day, it's good practice to check your weather app. In Athens, one day it can be scorching hot and the next day it can be freezing cold. Checking my weather app has saved me so many times. Additionally, a reusable water bottle and travel size umbrella are two things you should always keep on you. The reusable water bottle is great to have all year round, but it's especially great for the hotter days on campus. When it's rainy, you'll be grateful that you have an umbrella on you. If you follow these basic tips, as well as my advice on what to pack, you should be all set to handle Athens weather!
